Dr. Calvin Johnson has no communication skills, and botched my nose surgery to the point that it can not be fixed. The statistics show that 15% to 25% of first nose jobs are botched as a result of poor planning before surgery. Part of planning is communication. If you feel your surgeon is hiding something, he probably is, and you should select another surgeon. Dr. Calvin Johnson was known for deception during his consultations, because he was trying to avoid liability. As a patient of his, I can't reverse the disfigurement, all I can do is warn other people to avoid Hedgewood Facial Plastic Surgery Clinic, and anyone he has trained to be unethical.

Dr. Johnson was an unethical surgeon who was so corrupt, that he put his own personal needs ahead of his clients'.

Based on posts that have been shared by numerous patients over many years, it appears that a lot of Dr. Calvin Johnson's patients had issues with regard to his results. Patients have their right to post individual reviews, which is what benefits any objective person who is seeking a competent plastic surgeon, and allows them to make an educated decision on the best provider suited for their needs. Dr. Johnson's reviews on this website, along with multiple reviews on other websites over the years indicate that he had a lot of opportunities over the years to improve his techniques, not only surgically, but more so with the way he interacted with patients, and how he conducted his consultations. One of the comments I read was that, Dr. Johnson was not a proponent of digital imagery, because of his patients expectations. The fact is, at one time Dr. Johnson used digital imagery, but he didn't utilize this communication tool the way it is intended to be used. Digital imagery is a valuable communication tool, which defines the desired goal that the patient and surgeon have as a result of a surgery. Anyone can morph a “perfect nose” on a computer, that is not the purpose of digital imagery. Digital imagery confirms that a surgeon and a patient are on the same thought process as to what a patient and a plastic surgeon's realistic goals are for the surgery. Providers who don't use this tool, may not be able to stand by their results, and are usually hiding something. Patients have a right to know what reasonable results a surgery will produce, so that they can make an educated decision, if they want to have a surgery. Dr. Johnson lacked the communication skills to perform a comprehensive consultation which resulted in poor surgical results. Dr. Johnson also did not use before and after pictures of previous patients ,because he could not stand by his results. Before and after pictures are communication tools which help a patient determine the skill level of their surgeon, and communicate to the surgeon a mutual attainable goal for a patient, and a surgeon. Dr. Johnson lost sight of his purpose as a surgeon, which was to serve his clients' reasonable expectations. Unfortunately Dr. Johnson was paranoid about being liable for his actions, so much so, that his patients' suffered as a result. If you center your business around a client, you will succeed in achieving your personal goals. Unfortunately, Calvin never learned an important principle, a patient is always first.

Although the location of the facility is not in the ideal location, that is just not as important compared to the rudeness of the staff, and the poor level of attention that the Doctor's place on the process before the actual surgery takes place. The consultation was poor, which led to a poor surgical outcome. The Doctor's took the approach that the less detailed the consultation was, the better position that they were in regarding the liability of the surgery. What the Doctor's don't realize is the more detailed the consultation, the better chance of having a successful surgery, because the plastic surgeon knows what the expectation their clients expect, and the clients know what to expect after the surgery which limits the miscommunication that occurs as a result of not being detailed, and therefore there is less liability for the Doctor's. Overall it was a poor experience, and I feel that I was taken advantage of because the Doctor received his fee for the surgery, but I didn't receive the attainable results I asked for before the surgery, because of miscommunication. Miscommunication occurs often, which is why plastic surgery facilities need to utilize every diagnostic tool that is available to limit the miscommunication that occurs during a conversation. Doctor's should not try and take advantage of people for the desire to make a lot of money, if they can't fulfill their responsibilities as a surgeon. If a Doctor lacks the communication skills that are required to perform a detailed consultation, they should hire someone who has those skills to perform the consultation. The designated consultation associate would then communicated the desired outcome of the client to the plastic surgeon, then the plastic surgeon and client would go over the expectations. This simple process would limit mistakes by the Doctor, and above all, the process would put the patient at ease, knowing what to expect from the surgery.

Hedgewood Plastic Surgery Center is located in a very dangerous location, because it is in a crime ridden area in New Orleans. The facility has an automatic lock on the front door, so you have to wait to be buzzed in at the door because of the crime. There have been countless violent crimes in the area. It is not as safe as the cities of Metairie or Kenner, so make sure you don't stay in New Orleans or at the facility if you are having surgery at that location.
My personal experience was poor. Directly after the surgery I was wheeled in a recovery room, where I was still under anesthesia. I woke up as a result of the nurse violently slapping me in the face to wake me up, because she wanted to go home. She was slapping me as hard as she could, so she could go home for the day. She told me that the staff had left the facility, and we were the only ones left. Dr. Calvin Johnson didn't even bother to come and see me after the surgery to let me know how the surgery went. After the nurse continued to slap me in the face, I wanted to get out of the facility as soon as possible, and go home because of the poor experience.
A few days later I went back to the facility for a follow up, and asked a doctor who was doing a fellowship under Dr. Calvin Johnson, why I had bandages on the other areas of my face other than my nose, since I had Rhinoplasty. Dr. Calvin Johnson's fellow preceded to laugh at me, and make fun of me, even though I wasn't told by Dr. Calvin Johnson that the procedure included other sutures in an area other than my nose.
I went back again about seven days later for a follow up, where I found out that Dr. Calvin Johnson left a suture inside of my nose past seven days by mistake, and that it should have been taken out several days after the surgery. He took the suture out, and didn't even apologize for his incompetency.
Calvin M Johnson's practice was not based around a “patient first” approach. Overall the facility is not run professionally, and the staff seems to lack professionalism and common courtesy in every aspect of the business. Doctors like to establish their own surgery centers within their office, like Dr. Calvin Johnson established, Hedgewood Facial Plastic Surgery Center, so that they can make more money during a surgical procedure. Hedgewood Plastic Surgery Center, which Calvin Johnson founded is not run professionally, and is not equipped with the proper staff, diagnostic equipment, operational controls, and procedures which would limit mistakes, and treat patients with respect, consideration, and dignity. Now, Dr. Calvin Johnson has retired, which will result in better surgery results for people who are seeking plastic surgery procedures. I wish he would of retired in his fifties instead of in his seventies, that way I would have had a better chance of finding a competent surgeon who would of provided me with a successful outcome to surgery instead of a Botched Nose Surgery. He still owns Hedgewood Plastic Surgery Center, but it is still not managed properly, and has a couple of surgeons at the facility, that unfortunately have been taught by Calvin Johnson on how to take advantage of hard working people by doing as little as possible to earn a living.

Dr. Calvin Johnson lacks the communication skills, and the proper equipment in his office, digital imagery and pictures, to execute a thorough consultation. He has caused me financial loss, and self esteem problems as a result of his poor common sense. He intentionally wants to be vague during his consultation, so he can avoid liability. I encourage anyone who has surgery, to ask for after pictures so you can be objective with the results, but don't be surprised when he will not show them to you so he can avoid accountability.
