It took about a month to get in for my first appointment with the P.A. at Park Ridge Psychiatry (HOPE). I hadn’t been sleeping more than an hour or two a night in months (not due to the new babies but due to my insomnia and anxiety keeping me up all night) so I was becoming very forgetful and disorganized. The day of my appointment, I left work, stopped by my house to pick up my new patient paperwork and was on my way. Somehow I couldn’t find my paperwork when I got to the appointment (later I found it had somehow gotten stuck under a seat in my car) and ended up being six minutes late.

I told the receptionist that I couldn’t find my paperwork but I was sure I could fill it out again before they called my name. She said she had to check with the P.A. to see if she could still see me. I completed the paperwork quickly and went back up to the window. The receptionist said, “Wow that was fast” and proceeded to tell me that they just got word from the P.A. that they would need to reschedule my appointment. Turns out the rescheduled appointment was more than a month away. If you have ever struggled with post-partum depression mixed in with severe insomnia, you understand how devastating that would be to hear that you had to wait another month to be seen.

There was no compassion, no suggestion for other places that could help me sooner. Were it not for my faith in God, I may not have made it another week much less another month! Places like this are more than likely the reason moms with post-partum depression end up killing themselves. Surely no one wants to be in the dark place of depression but when your doctor can only refer you to places like HOPE what else can you do?

Park Ridge Health is all about helping other Park Ridge Health Associates make money. When I asked my doctor to please help me and refer me to another physician, they simply told me that I would be better off just scheduling with the HOPE place because the wait would probably be just as long elsewhere. Well guess what, I would really like to not break down sobbing every day for another month. I would really like to be able to be myself and be the mom that my kids deserve. I refused to accept the answers and lack thereof offered by Park Ridge Health and not to my surprise, I was able to find another psychiatry office who was able to schedule an appointment in less than a week. It’s nice to know that some people DO still care and DO want to help people who are in the grips of a mental illness.

Depression & Insomnia are just as serious as other illnesses, sometimes even more so because you can’t see the injury! Shame on Park Ridge Health for not caring more about their patients. If you can’t fit any new patients into your schedule, fine, but shame on you for not helping people get well even if it is not through your own company. What ever happened to doctor’s choosing to practice medicine because they wanted to help people be well and save lives? I don’t doubt that there are still doctors out there who practice medicine for the love of people but I do doubt any such providers exist at Park Ridge Health.

If you are in the grips of depression, and need to be seen quickly, look elsewhere!

Lori Robbins in the Behavioral Health Hope unit is a great asset to Park Ridge. She’s not only energetic and upbeat, but also very bright and kind. She shares her life experiences when appropriate and she truly listens to her patients.
