I first saw Dr Hoffman in the early 90's. An eye doctor referred me to him for an R eye droop that the doctor thought may be myasthenia gravis. At my first visit to Dr Hoffman, he briefly examined me. He then instructed me to go home and place an ice cube over my eye. He stated if the eyelid raised to a normal position, then I probably had MG. I did as I was told, and my eyelid did raise. I told him that on my next visit, and he place me on Mestinon, a cholenergic medication that affects nerve conduction. He had me come back every 6 months for a follow up, and I had no changes. After about 3 years of this, I just had my primary MD prescribe the med as Dr Hoffman explained that I had a life long condition, that probably wouldn't change much.I admit that probably wasn't too wise on my part. In Febuary of this year I had a near fainting episode. And I started having frequent irregular heartbeats. I went to my primary MD, who thought it was a cardiac event and sent me to a cardiologist. They did a heart ablation on me.Shortly after I started getting very severe headaches, and started getting very fatigued. I would awake in the AM feeling like I hadn't slept. I started having moments of confusion. Also my blood pressure was elevated. Needless to say, I started to get very worried. I went back to my primary MD who suggested that I see Dr Hoffman again to see if these symptoms weren't related to myasthenia gravis.I called his office and they stated I could see his PA Susan that day if I wished. From the very start the visit was a nightmare.I could tell from the beginning that the PA was not really listening to me. I tried to explain the symptoms, but it was clear she was more interested in my diagnoses of chronic anxiety. I explained, yes I have chronic anxiety, but I was sure what I was experiencing was not anxiety. She then called Dr Hoffman in to the room after speaking to him in another office. As soon as he walked in he started asking about my anxiety level, and how my heart ablation was most likely the cause of the anxiety. He was incredibly patronizing. At one point, patting me on my shoulder! Then he said they would get a CT of my head, but he doubted there was anything physically wrong with me. I left the office totally upset, I knew something was wrong, and it wasn't mental. I went back to my primary MD, who referred me to Dr Kang in the Dent institute. I told Dr Kang about my diagnoses of MG and how it was diagnosed with an ice cube. He asked me if any other tests were done to comfirm it. I said no. He looked astounded. He stated although an ice cube can be used in a doctors office as an indicator of MG, further testing must be done. He order a blood panel on me and a EMG, which measures electrical conduction to the muscles. It turned out that I DID NOT HAVE Myasthenia gravis! I had been taking that med all these years for nothing! He questioned me further on my symptoms, looked at me and said he suspected that I may have chronic sleep apnea, that was causing all the symptoms I was having. I went for a sleep study and the diagnoses was confirmed. I will start CPAP shortly which DR Kang says will alleviate my problems. It appears that Dr Hoffman may be incompetent, and likes to label patients.
