About

Craig Cummins

Dr. Cummins began his practice in 2001 and has since developed an orthopedic practice with a primary focus on the management of shoulder disorders and sports-related issues. Since 2001, Dr. Cummins has functioned as a team physician for Barrington High School and previously was a team physician for Lake Zurich High School, from 2002-2016. He is board-certified in orthopedic surgery and is one of less than 5% of orthopedic surgeons with an additional board certification in sports medicine. Dr. Cummins is a member of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgery, the American Orthopaedic Society of Sports Medicine, and the Arthroscopy Association of North America. He has served as an instructor for the Arthroscopy Association of North America, and has also consulted for various orthopedic companies, teaching basic and cutting-edge arthroscopic techniques to orthopedic surgeons across the country.

Dr. Cummins has been involved at the leadership level at Good Shepherd Hospital having previously served as the orthopaedic section chairman and the surgery department chairman. Dr. Cummins’ leading-edge techniques, combined with proven methods, provide his patients with the best orthopedic care possible. He works to develop a partnership with his patients, which begins with listening and gathering information, not only about the orthopedic injury but also how the physical problem is affecting the patient’s life.

Dr. Cummins seeks to develop a dialogue with his patients to help them fully understand the diagnostic process, their own unique problem, their treatment choices, and the recovery process. He believes that knowledgeable patients make the best decisions about their own treatment and enjoy the best outcomes.

On a more personal note, Dr. Cummins has been married to his wife Becca since 1993 after meeting her at the University of Florida. His wife is a practicing dermatologist with Northwestern Memorial Physicians Group and her office is located in Deerfield, Illinois. Drs. I had/have a shoulder issue.
1st visit - Dr. came in and said, "How did that shot work for you?" I said, "What shot? My name is ____ and this is my first time here, I've never met you." I explained my issue, he looked at my MRI and said, "You have a tear?" Tested my ROM and said I had a frozen shoulder (and I did/do). Within a few minutes we were talking surgery.
2nd visit was at the hospital in the surgical area. I arrived at 9:30am the time I was told to arrive. I was told the Dr. was "ahead of schedule" and I was prepped and in surgery in 1/2 hour! Cool, right? After surgery, he met with my wife and was told he didn't fix the tear and gave her pictures he took. Then saw me, I asked about the tear and he told me the same thing. I stayed in 'recovery' for HOURS, why? My Dr. left without giving any scripts for pain management. The hospital couldn't get a hold of him and someone told them to wait until his partner to get out of surgery and have them write me scripts. I finally asked to see my wife so she knows I'm alright! Apparently, she was asking where I was too. I stayed in the hospital 4 hours longer than needed.
3rd visit - In the Dr. office, I saw his assistant and she explained the photos and showed me the tear. She said, these tears are under the rotator cuff and we don't repair these?? IDK???!!!
4th visit - Saw him AND assistant and questioned my ROM, it wasn't coming back much. I have been in P.T. since the 3rd day after surgery and it wasn't much better two months after the surgery. His reply was, you're doing fine and they had a protocol for the shoulder. I asked about the tear, he said, "What tear??" I am so frustrated with Dr. Cummins and the lack of care HE gave. He assistant was wonderful.
Where am I now with my shoulder? I still have a screwed up shoulder. It still is impinged. It still lacks ROM. I honestly question whether he did anything. NOTHING HE DID IMPROVED MY CONDITION. I chose this "specialist" because of the reviews. I should have walked out on the 1st visit and listened to my small voice that said, "RUN!"
